Several animals resting in recovery cages after treatment
Real photo: animals recovering in the ward after surgery

Every small life deserves kindness.

Injured dogs, sick cats and abandoned animals are often frightened when they come to us. We take them to the vet, help them heal, and find them a loving home.

The rescue and medical photos on this site are real.

Medical rescue · Real photos

On the operating table, every one is a life

Some images may be upsetting, but we want you to see how brave they are.

  • A cat with severe facial injuries

Treated in surgery under anaesthetic. We didn't give up on her.

  • A medical worker in protective clothing operating on an animal

Every operation is a new hope

Medicine, anaesthetic and supplies, with every step carefully prepared by the team.

  • Two medical workers operating on an animal together

    Surgery takes a whole team

Everyone has a role, so every step is safe.

Photos are real records of our medical rescue work.

What they face

Scenes like these are not rare on Hong Kong's streets

We hope that one day, scenes like these will be a thing of the past.

  • A dog so thin its ribs show, lying on a clinic floor with an IV drip Illustration

Skin and bone, kept alive on a drip

Starved for so long they can't even stand when they reach the clinic.

  • A soaked old stray cat standing on a concrete ledge by a village house Illustration

Bald, inflamed skin. The two brothers keep each other warm.

  • A cat with a cone and a bandaged front leg huddled in a recovery cage Illustration

    An injured cat, still terrified

The wound is dressed, but she still can't trust people.

  • A thin old dog chained to a rusty gate in the rain Illustration

The bowl is empty and the chain is short. He can't go anywhere.

  • Three dirty kittens abandoned in a cardboard box behind a wet market Illustration

Only just born, left in a box to take their chances.

These are illustrations of situations we often see in our rescue work, not photos of specific animals.

One dog's journey

Ah Hei's story is our story too

Ah Hei is one of countless stray dogs. Walk with him and you'll see why the smart eco education centre matters.

Ah Hei's story is based on the common experiences of stray dogs in Hong Kong. Photos are illustrative.

  1. Illustration

    Chapter 1 · The street

A pair of eyes on a rainy night

Thin and weak, Ah Hei wandered the back lanes, living on scraps beside the bins. He didn't trust people, yet every night he still looked up, waiting for someone willing to stop.

  2. Illustration

    Chapter 2 · Rescued

Treated gently for the first time

The rescue team brought Ah Hei to the centre, where the vet treated his skin disease, vaccinated and desexed him. For the first time, he slept on a clean blanket.

  3. Illustration

    Chapter 3 · Learning

Finding confidence on a green campus

On a training ground run on rainwater and solar power, trainers used positive reinforcement to teach Ah Hei to sit, wait and get along with people. Students learned alongside and took the methods back to the community.

  4. Illustration

    Chapter 4 · Home

    Finding the right home

The matching centre found Ah Hei a patient family that suits his personality. Today he sleeps every night beside his young owner.

Lifetime care

With them every step of the way, to the very end

Rescue is only the beginning. From training, adoption and medical care to care in old age and a peaceful farewell, we want every life treated gently and lived with dignity to the end.

Rescue → Training → Adoption → Medical care → Senior care → Final journey

Letting them grow old in peace

Many senior dogs are abandoned because of age or limited mobility, and they are harder to rehome. The sanctuary will provide cushioned rest areas, barrier-free spaces, joint care, regular health checks and dedicated companionship, so they can grow old in the sunshine, never alone.

    • Barrier-free design and climate-controlled rest areas
    • Geriatric care, joint therapy and nutritious meals
    • Volunteer companionship and "Sponsor a Senior Dog"
  • A pet memorial garden on a hillside with paw-print stones, white flowers, a bench and a faint rainbow in the sky Concept illustration Final journey

Sending them to the Rainbow Bridge with dignity

When life reaches its end, we will be by their side, offering palliative care to ease pain, then a respectful farewell ceremony and eco-friendly cremation so they can leave in peace. The memorial garden gives every family member and carer a place to return and remember.

    • End-of-life palliative care to reduce suffering
    • Respectful farewell ceremony and eco-friendly cremation
    • Memorial garden and permanent memorial stones

There are many ways to care for them

Adopt a new family member, volunteer your time, share their stories with friends, or support our work if you'd like to. They feel every bit of care.

AAWF Asia Animal Welfare Foundation · Building Project

More than a rescue

Building Asia's first smart, eco-friendly animal education centre

Rescue. Train. Educate. Building Asia's first smart eco animal education centre.

We are building an innovative centre that brings together animal rescue, water- and energy-saving facilities and humane education, so stray animals receive care and training, find the right home, and more people learn to respect life.

Stage 1 goal

$20,000,000

Total goal HK$80,000,000 · raised in three milestones: HK$20M → HK$50M → HK$80M

Our vision

To become Asia's most distinctive animal welfare foundation

We believe caring for animals, protecting the environment and educating the next generation are one and the same. AAWF brings all three together in a sustainable model that sets a new standard for animal welfare in Asia.

    Smart and green

Powered by rainwater harvesting, solar energy and smart energy-saving systems, so fewer resources care for more lives.

    Humane education

Positive training rebuilds dogs' confidence, and we share that knowledge with adopters, students, schools and the community.

Change you can see

Once the smart centre opens, every drop of water, every unit of power and every life will be recorded, so every donor can see the impact they make.

Projected yearly impact once the centre opens

  • 1,200,000 litres

    Rainwater recycled

  • 85,000 kWh

    Clean solar power generated

  • 500 dogs

    Complete positive training

  • 10,000 visits

Public and students in humane education

These are planning targets. Actual figures will be published once the centre opens.
